Sonu Shankar was sworn in as the Principal Deputy Chief Information Officer (PDCIO) of the Department of War on August 24, 2026. In this role, he partners with the Chief Information Officer to drive the Department’s information technology, cybersecurity, and digital modernization initiatives, advancing decision advantage for the warfighter and strengthening America’s technological edge.
Mr. Shankar brings nearly two decades of cybersecurity industry experience at the intersection of product innovation, executive leadership, and international business development. Most recently, he served as a Strategic Advisor to the Department as part of the Business Operators for National Defense (BOND) program. Prior to this federal service, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Phosphorus Cybersecurity, where he led global operations, corporate strategy, and growth through the company’s acquisition by Dragos. Earlier, he held senior product leadership roles at Arctic Wolf Networks, driving the expansion of its managed detection and response platform, and technical leadership positions at Cisco Systems, focused on software-defined segmentation and trustworthy technologies. He also conducted research work early in his career at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Across these roles, Mr. Shankar has consistently scaled complex security capabilities from concept to operational impact, built high-performing teams, and delivered mission-focused outcomes in demanding environments.
Mr. Shankar holds a Master of Business Administration from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and a degree in Computer Engineering from Texas A&M University.
