Acting Deputy CIO for Cybersecurity and the Acting Chief Information Security Officer
for the Department of Defense, Office of the Chief Information Officer
Mr. Mark Hakun is Acting Deputy Chief Information Officer for Cybersecurity for the Department of Defense, Office of the Chief Information Officer. Mr. Hakun is responsible for the definition and execution of the Department's cybersecurity program. He oversees the coordination of cybersecurity standards, policies and procedures with other federal agencies, coalition partners and industry. Most recently, Mr. Hakun served as the Deputy Chief Information Officer for the National Security Agency.
In 1988, following his commissioning as an Ensign, he completed Naval nuclear propulsion certification and served in USS MISSISSIPPI (CGN-40) during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He later served in USS WADSWORTH (FFG-9) and eventually retired from the Naval Reserve. Returning to civilian life, he worked in industry as a satellite communications (SATCOM) engineer for the Space and Naval Warfare Command (SPAWARSYSCOM). Accepting a recall to active duty, he started his cybersecurity career as the SPAWAR Corporate Information Assurance Officer and was subsequently hired into the government civil service. Mr. Hakun next moved into the acquisition community as the Network Security Principal Assistant Program Manager to PMW 160 within the Program Executive Office Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (PEO C41), San Diego, CA. He was responsible for fielding computer network defense and cross-domain solutions systems on Navy networks worldwide.
In 2007, Mr. Hakun joined the National Security Agency and held various management positions within the Information Assurance Directorate including the chief of the Engineering Management and Services Group. In addition to overseeing the engineering efforts within the DOD Public Key Infrastructure and the Key Management Infrastructure Programs, he also was responsible for legacy key management systems, cryptographic contracts and logistics along with independent testing and laboratory transformation. Additionally, he served the Department while detailed to Defense Information Systems Agency as the Director for the National Background Investigation Services.
As a member of the Acquisition Professional Community, he is certified in Program Management Level Ill through the Defense Acquisition University. He is also a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). Mr. Hakun is a recipient of the Navy Commendation Medal and Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award. Mr. Hakun graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a BS in Aerospace Engineering. He earned his MS in Aerospace Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School.
